Husband Archive

HUSBAND ARCHIVE
Artist: @boihugo
Designer: Ginko

Husband Archive (2026) sits somewhere between a gift, an archive, and a small study on images of men and masculinity, sisterhood, meme culture, and the circulation of desire.

“Over the years, a close friend has developed a habit of sending me images of men he finds attractive, usually accompanied by the message: “我老公 (my husband).” Most of these men share a similar type and occasionally someone unexpected appears. The messages arrive casually, late at night or in the middle of a work day, and then disappear again into the flow of daily chat.

The artist book gathers a selection of these images removed from their original context of private messages. The sources are wide-ranging: memes, political news, fashion magazines, memes, even Vinted listings. Before the internet, we gays and girls flipped through magazines together and pointed at our favorite male celebrities and put their posters and stickers all over our bedrooms. Now we send each other screenshots.

It begins with the informal, ephemeral image-sharing that structures queer friendship, a mode of collective looking that leaves almost no trace yet accumulates over time into something like a shared visual language. The act of looking here is less about judging or ranking bodies than about sharing a moment of fascination. The images function almost like conversation: brief, repetitive, sometimes absurd. Each “husband” exists only temporarily, replaced by another a few days later.

This book is also a birthday present to the friend. It is, above all, a love letter to a friendship.”
